National Institute of Technology (NIT) Silchar invites applications from eligible Indian nationals for admission to the PhD Program (Full-Time and Part-Time) for the Academic Year 2026 – 27. This prestigious admission is offered under the “Visvesvaraya PhD Scheme for Electronics and IT: Phase II”, sponsored by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Government of India.

Eligibility/Qualification

Candidates seeking admission to the PhD program in Engineering Departments must satisfy at least one of the following criteria:

  1. M.E./M.Tech. or equivalent: Must be in an appropriate area with a minimum CGPA/CPI of 6.5 on a 10-point scale (or 60% marks). For SC/ST candidates, a minimum CGPA/CPI of 6.0 on a 10-point scale (or 55% marks) is required.
  2. B.E./B.Tech. or equivalent: Must have an excellent academic record with a CGPA/CPI of at least 8.0 on a 10-point scale (or 75% marks). For graduates from IITs/NITs, the minimum CGPA/CPI requirement is 7.0 on a 10-point scale. For SC/ST candidates, there is a relaxation of 0.5 CGPA/CPI or 5% marks.

Job Description & Scheme Benefits

Selected candidates will work on research problems having direct relevance to the industry. The fellowship benefits under the scheme are structured as follows:

For Full-Time Candidates:

  • Monthly Fellowship: Rs. 46,250/- for the first two years and Rs. 52,500/- for the remaining three years (support up to 5 years).
  • Reimbursement of Rent (ROR): Provided as per funding agency norms if on-campus accommodation is not provided by the Institute.
  • Annual Contingency Grant: Up to Rs. 1,20,000/- per year.
  • Conference Support: Financial support for attending international conferences.

For Part-Time Candidates:

  • One-time Incentive: A scholarship amount of Rs. 3.00 Lakh after successful completion of the PhD degree, subject to the submission of necessary documents as per the SOP.

    • Scanned copy of the duly filled-in application form.
    • Self-attested copies of all relevant educational certificates and mark sheets.
  3. Candidates must bring all original documents along with one set of self-attested photocopies (including GATE/NET scorecard, Proof of DOB, Community Certificate, and NOC from current employer, if applicable) at the time of the written test/interview.
